ANNOUNCING OUR ANNUAL PICNIC at ANASTASIA STATE PARK

The Annual Picnic held Saturday, May 28, '10 was a great success. Thirty=one members and guests attended. "BIG THANKS" to the  "AVANTI CLUB OF FLORIDA"  for their support. Unfortunately 3 couples of our Chapter couldn't make it. The "Johnson's" lost oil pressure on Interstate 95 just North of Golf World Village and had to trailer their trusty Lark back home. The "Raber" family slept in after a long drive back from Charleston, S.C. and just couldn't make it. The "Wyman's" haven't checked in yet to tell me why they couldn't make it but they seldom miss an event. Watch for pictures and notes an the "EVENTS" page. Bernie sent me 81 pictures so I'm certain you will be in one or two for sure.

5 Guests joined us for this annual event and 3 of those joined our Chapter.

VALENTINE'S DAY EXTRAVAGANZA 2-14-10, 4 PM, Sunday

Beach Road Chicken, 4132 Atlantic Boulevard Check our "EVENTS" page for pictures.

"Beach Road Chicken" was the scene of Hugs & Kisses this Valentine's Day. A table setting of heart shaped boxes, filled with chocolate candies and an American Beauty Rose for each of the ladies greeted the 20+ members and guests who joined the celebration meeting. After all were seated, with Rose Marie and Tom Johnson center table Joel Daniel offered the invocation. (This time Rose Marie and Tom got to sit with the main table as promised)

Herb Hildebrand then gave the financial report. Herb also brought a piece of Studebaker memorabilia, a Studebaker Owners Manual, in pristine condition. The only clue to it's date was a paragraph covering "How to operate the SPARK ADVANCE LEVER". Now you know this has to be OLD, maybe pre 1920's ? A real treat to read. Studebaker offered a great warranty in those days. A full coverage "90 DAY WARRANTY" offering repair or exchange by the dealer. Imagine, "90 DAYS", WOW, what confidence. "Thanks Herb"

Marilyn, Luis and their daughter Sallie Parrish renewed their membership for 2010 boosting our picnic funds for this next year. (We get to eat more hot dogs and hamburgers). Marilyn's family has maintained membership in our local Chapters "Cowford Classics" and NorthEast Florida Studebaker Club since the late 1970's. "Thank you" for your continued support.

Unfortunately our most distant members from Fredericktown, Ohio didn't make it to our celebration. (We ate their chicken dinners) Did "SNOW" keep them away ? Richard and Mary James are also recognized as long time members and supporters of both our Chapter and ACOF. Their "Treasures" can be seen on the "Who's Who" page on our web site.

As our meals were being served Joel Daniel reminded us of the 46th SDC International Meet in Glendale, Arizona, May 3--June 5, 2010 and the 33rd. Florida State Meet, October 22nd--24th, 2010 at Ramada Inn, Conference Center, Tallahassee, Florida. Web site www.ramada.com/ramada/control/booking/property_info?property/d=01263&cid=carat_search-ramada. for room rates and reservations. If your going, be sure to mention "Studebaker" for a special discounted rate. More information will be coming which I will forward via E-Mail.

After dinner our Valentine's Day Special gift drawing was held with Ed & Sue Raber the winners. The Floppy-eared, guitar plating dog was a BIG HIT with Sue. (I think Ed gave it to his sweetheart-reluctantly) (See picture on "Events" page)

Plans for our first outing of 2010 are progressing. I will be in touch with the South Georgia Chapter over the next week to find out how many of their members plan on attending our annual picnic at Anastasis State Park, St. Augustine, Fl. This is a strong Studebaker/Avanti Chapter which did join us for our annual picnic once before. Lots of fun, informative and many nice Studebaker and Avanti's. Keeping the gas price down will help get them here.

Matthew Burnette, a member of the Georgia Chapter publishes an article (bi-monthly) in Turning Wheels. Be sure to catch his article "TAILGATING WITH MATTHEW" in the February issue, page 6.

Save the last Saturday of APRIL, April 24th and attend this Annual Picnic at Anastasia State Park. 11 AM to 4 PM, (Serving time 12 Noon). The menu; Grilled Hamburgers(low fat) and Hot Dogs (all beef), Potato Salad, Macaroni Salad, Baked BBQ Beans, various Casserole dishes-prepared by volunteer members- and fabulous desserts. A selection of soda's, Tea and bottled water. Requests are welcome.

A long stem American Beauty Rose was proudly presented to each Sweetheart as we retired to the parking lot for more pictures and car talk. As the sun set the meeting concluded with "Studebaker's" returning their owners safely to their homes. (Pictures of the meeting are posted on the "EVENTS" page of our web.---enjoy)

Herb and Cindy Hildebrand with their trusty Lark going home.

CHRISTMAS DINNER---YES, even in the rain they came, they ate, they partied and enjoyed the friendship and Christmas celebration.. More to be posted shortly. (Have to write it, our secretary -Shirley Hastings- was home sick with a nasal infection.) Pictures will be posted on "EVENTS" page. Come and see the happy faces.

PICNIC IN GREEN COVE SPRINGS, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17TH

Our last outing of '09. Beautiful People, Beautiful Cars and a BEAUTIFUL DAY. If you didn't attend this event you missed a great gathering. Once again, I have to applaud and express my appreciation to those 14 members and guests that made this day special. Watch for pictures and notes on the "EVENTS" page next week.

We have reserved the Large Picnic Shelter (LPS) from 10am to 3pm, plenty of time for the last outing of this year. Secure parking across the street and in front of the Police Station--real protection for your car. The Chapter will furnish meats (Hamburgers/Hot Dogs) Buns, Chips, Condiments, Soda's, charcoal and a match. Will you bring a dish ? Potato Salad, Baked Beans, Salad of some sort, Jello or Dessert Speciality ?. Let me know so we don't duplicate. This is a great park with a Pier, Natural Spring Swimming Pool, walking trail and a play ground. They have added Restrooms and an area for kids to play. Check it out:"Parks&Recreation"then click on "Spring Park". Please sign up ASAP so we can purchase foods and drink. Send me an e-mail:E-Mail

MEMORIAL, MR. NOLLIE L. HINTON

It is with the deepest sadness that we inform you of the loss of our friend and fellow Studebaker/Avanti enthusiast Mr. Nollie L. Hinton.
Nollie passed away on October 1, after a struggle with heart disease. For those of us that are active in the North East Florida Studebaker Drivers Club and the Avanti Club of Florida, John Ebstein Chapter, of which he was active in both, we will cherish our memories of Nollie.

We have always acknowledged Nollie as the driving force behind the founding of our Club. He took an idea to create or reestablish a local Studebaker Club to completion. We "Thank" him for his determined actions. He was untiring in his efforts to promote the Club and related activities (remember the "SOUTHEASTERN ZONE MEET of 2002", our first attempt at a Studebaker, Regional Meet in Jacksonville ?)

During the time we have been together as a Club, Nollie has probably purchased enough Studebaker's so that each member and their spouses could drive at least one.

It goes without saying that anybody that was around Nollie knew he loved passionately a number of things. He loved the Lord and he loved his family. He loved Studebaker's and he loved the social settings the club provided.

In respect to his Studebaker activities, beyond just the pleasure of working on old cars one of the things that he seemed to enjoy most was to rescue an orphaned Studebaker from certain destruction. The idea that he could take a car that was destined to be discarded and turn it into a treasure seemed to please him as much as the restoration process itself.

For those that got to know him over a long period of time we realized that under that (sometimes gruff, crusty) exterior was a heart of gold, possibly chrome, triple plated. He was evangelistic in his promotion of Studebaker's and the Club. He was a pleasure to be around. A road trip with Nollie was a real treat.

He will be sorely missed. We will remember Nollie with great affection. With the respect to his Studebaker Club activities part of his legacy will be the cars he restored. They will be driven and enjoyed for many years to come. A tangible reminder of his devotion to a marque we all love.

There will be a Viewing to be held Sunday, October 4, 6 to 8 PM, at the Nassau Funeral Home in Callahan Florida. The address is 541720 US 1. ( It's located on the right side of US 1, traveling North from Jacksonville, approximately 3/4 mile before the intersection of Lem Turner Rd. and US 1 as you enter Callahan.) Their number is 904-879-1770.

The Funeral will be Monday, October 5, 2009 and will be held at his church. The Riverside Primitive Baptist Church located at 702 Dellwood Ave., Jacksonville, Fl. 32204. Services will be conducted at 11 AM by his Pastor and friend, Elder Mike Newman. Following the service interment will be at Jones Cemetery, Callahan Florida.

The family would be pleased in a special way to honor and remember Nollie that we drive a Studebaker or Avanti. Any old car would be fine, he loved them all.

O Charley's Quarterly Dinner Meeting

Another great meal at O'Charley's and a superb Meeting. 26 Members and guests attended and 12 Studebakers/Avanti's came out in the rain to support our Chapter. Our newest members, Michelle and Joe Dearing even brought their 16 day old baby "Jude" for an introduction to Studebaker enthusiasts. Check the "EVENTS" page for photo's of members that attended and their cars. The sun did show its self so we did get some good pictures.

"STUDEBAKER DRIVERS CLUB INTERNATIONAL"  says

"DRIVE YOUR STUDEBAKER JULY 4TH"

Weather permitting, bring your Studebaker or Avanti to our "Photo Opportunity" and then join in a display of your pride and joy at the "Antique Car Meet" at "Krystal Burger, Merrill Rd. 5 pm to 9 pm--Saturday, July 4th.

We will meet at the Hampton Inn & Suites (North end of Tinseltown) directly behind T.G. Friday's at...3 PM... The photo shoot will be across Southside Blvd at the Lake. Exit Southside Blvd. at the Publix entrance and turn left on the service road behind the strip mall. Two locations have been elected for the background scenery. Meet us there and then cruise to Krystal's after the shoot.

Secretaries Notes

On Saturday, December 6th, we met for dinner and fellowship at O'Charleys Restaurant on Regency Square Boulevard.

There were 21 in attendance and we really had a splendid time. The accommodations were superb and the servers went out of their way to make certain everyone got exactly what they ordered.

We did not have much old business to discuss so we got right in to the Holiday activites, picture taking, an auction, ordering our food and having great converations. The Treasurer's report was given by our treasurer, Larry Bryanton. We are in pretty good financial shape and with this years membership dues coming in, over the next month, we'll be in even better shape for the coming picnic events being planned for this next year. Membership dues ($20.00) per family were collected after we ate. If you were not present please send your check to BOB EDWARDS, 1121 Jamaica Rd. East, Jacksonville, Florida, 32216. Please make checks out to BOB EDWARDS and note in the bottom left corner FOR: Studebaker Chapter Dues.

Tickets were sold to raffle off "Studebaker" Christmas Ornaments ordered from the SDC CLUB STORE, as advertised in Turning Wheels. Guest Mr. Bradley Biggers, who joined us with his parents was elected to draw the first winning ticket. His family is related to Mr. Carl Pearson who was one of the founding members of Studebaker in South Bend, Indiana. Guess who's number he drew first, naturally, his own. See the "EVENTS" page for additional comments with pictures of individuals taken as things occured.

At Meeting closure we discussed plans for our next two get togethers. First, a "Valentines Day" dinner is being organized for Saturday, February 14th. Our 1st spring picnic (Annual Event) will be at Anastasia State Park, Saturday, May 2. 09. We will be joined by the Avanti Club of South Florida. They have attended this function once before, maybe 2002 ? We look forward to their company and this annual event before it gets too hot.

After all the indoors activities and a great meal we retired to the parking lot for more pictures of members and their cars.

We especially want to recognize 3 new members: Ed & Sue Raber, Milinda Oberdier & Jeff Vandertoll and Nita & Randy Morris. Guests Terry & Jean Pope and Bradley Biggers and his family. (Again, see pictures on "Events" page.

We missed Nollie and Janelle Hinton our club founders. We're told he is feeling much better now that he's home. He plans on joining us in February as he'll be stronger for sure by then.

Clay High School Band Car Show

Saturday 15 November

Did you attend this great car show ? Well, one of our members did and took home "Best in Show" Rick and Carol Wyman displayed their "Flamingo" 1961 GT Hawk and walked off with a trophy. She beat a '60 Corvette, '57 T-Bird, '62 Chevy Impala, '67 Caprice convertible and various other nice iron, 25 cars in all. "Studebaker" styling is still a winner no doubt and the color certainly helped. We love this car.

Good going Rick and Carol

CHAPTER MEET

WHEN; SATURDAY, JULY 26,'08
WHERE; Charlie's "Old Time Texaco" 2253 Oxbow Rd.

Arriving at 11:30 to allow time for setup we found Charlie (our Host) sitting at the picnic table waiting for the crowd. Charlie had everything in place, tables and chairs set up, Gas Station lights on and Studebaker door prizes for 2 guests ready to hand out. In less than 30 minutes Trish, Janelle, Bernie, and Mary had the tables re-arranged, table cloths on and food displayed. This year we kept the ice cream in Charlie and Mary's refrigerator until time to serve. (No soup to drink this year) By 1:30 we counted 19 hungry members and guests.

Our host Charlie opened the meeting with door prizes. Janelle's name was drawn first and guest Tom Spargo second. Both door prizes were selected from the Studebaker Museum catalog by Charlie. (nice going Charlie) Guests Clifton Estes, Tom Spargo, and Randy and wife Nita brought laughter and new conversation topics to the meet. Tom's car shirt was examined for a "Studebaker" but none was found. Randy and Nita were so impressed they joined our chapter on-the-spot,. Welcome new members Randy and Nita Morris. They are also proud owners of a 1949 Studebaker, Landcruiser (4Dr) which we hope we will get to see at the next meeting. Randy is feverishly working on making it road worthy again.

Next on the agenda was "Studebaker, Coming Events" covered by Bob. The Tri-State Meet (AKA Southeastern Zone Meet) will be held August 22 and 23rd, in Asheville, N.C. Meet Headquarters : Holiday Inn Airport, I-26, Exit 9, South of Asheville. For Reservations call; 828-684-1213, a special rate of $85 is offered for Studebaker guests.

The 31st Florida State Studebaker Meet is October 24th & 25th in Clearwater, Fl. The Central Florida Chapter is hosting the event this year, your chapter donated funds for 1 Trophy. Be sure to attend and support Florida's Studebaker State Meet. For more information contact Larry Good @ 727-235-2428.

TIME TO EAT : 50's music filled the air as we attacked two trays of over 140 sandwich wedges, BBQ chips, 2 Veggie trays with dip, new potato and southern style potato salad completed the main course. All this then ICE CREAM, 5 flavors to be eaten in bowls or sugar cone. Two-thirds of the sandwiches disappeared along with about half of the Ice Cream. We really missed the members who signed up to attend and couldn't make it. Lots of food left over. Fortunately Bernie volunteered to take the sandwiches to fellow employees at the zoo tomorrow. The Ice Cream went to Charlie & Mary and Bob & Trish. (We didn't really need it, calories, calories and more calories.)

After touring Charlies Old time Service Station and barn working area a fund raising drawing was held for a "Studebaker" plaid 4x4 Picnic blanket. Bernie's name was drawn and she walked off with the blanket. Wait till Nick sees this. Just perfect for use with his Gold Wing for picnics.

Yes, a little rain fell but no one got wet under the heavily leafed trees. The humidiy was high but an occasional breeze made it comfortable. I've had a number of complimentary E-Mails so all-in-all another success.

Many "THANKS" to our Hosts Charlie & Mary Downing for letting us use their backyard and for storing our ice cream in their frig. By general vote the attending members agreed to donate $100 to Charlie's PET Project. (Personal Energized Transportation). They have constructed and shipped almost 100 vehicles to victim's of leg amputation caused by exploding ordinance left behind in the fields after wars mostly in South Africa.

Be sure to see some of the pictures of cars gassing up at Charlies "Old Time Texaco Service Station" on the "Events" and "Who's Who" page.

Secretaries Notes: May 13, '08

On Saturday, April 26th, we met in St. Augustine at Anastasia State Park for our Annual Picnic. There were 16 in attendance. Nollie's Hinton's wife Janelle and Steve James's wife, Lark missed the event do to sickness. Rick Wyman's wife Carol also missed the picnic do to a recent back injury. Hopefully all have recovered and will be able to attend our next Meet.

There was no old business discussed. The new business centered around the Florida State Studebaker Meet in Clearwater in October and the Studebaker International Meet in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in September. Too early to get a commitment for either Meet but more information will be posted as show dates get closer. This will be the largest International Meet ever held based on the number of registrations already received. Are you planning on attending either meet ? Let us know via E-Mail. E_MAIL

Recommendations for future activities included a trip to the Jacksonville zoo. Bernie Kelpac our Event Planner works at the zoo and may be able to be our "private" guide if she is scheduled to work that weekend. A date sometime near the end of June was suggested. Some members think it will be too hot and suggested it be tabled until sometime in the fall. No definate decision was reached. Another suggestion was to do something at "Cold Stone Creamery" (ice cream). Since there is not a lot of room to sit in these establishments, much less have a Meeting, this did not get a lot of support. Members Charley & Mary Downing have offered the use of their Texaco Station where we would be under trees and could have an Ice Cream Meeting. Watch for the news of our next get together as it will be posted on the website as soon as a decision is made.

Since the Treasurer was not in attendance Bob Edwards gave the treasurer's report. Our financial status is strong and we can look forward to a lot of Ice Cream purchased by your dues so be sure to attend. Any special choices of flavor be sure to E-Mail Bob and Trish so they can put them on the list. Bob took pictures of all the Studebakers present and will be posting them on the website under "Who's Who" page with a description of the and the owners/members name. No personal history is planned.

We all enjoyed the day (the weather was beautiful) eating hot dogs, hamburgers and steaks, along with the wonderful side dishes that go "hand-hand" with these. Of course, everyone enjoyed the opportunity to visit and catch up with what everyone else has been doing. For those of you who couldn't come, we missed you and look forward to seeing you at our next get together.

Two beautiful Studebakers were present for their first viewing. Steve and Lark James 2006 (last sold) Avanti was simply stunning. The pearl (crystal white) paint really enhanced the style and beauty of the car. Rick and Carol's 1962, Gran Turismo Hawk (Orange) is also outstanding and an eye catcher for sure. They have moved up into the G.T.Hawk class and are proud owners. Rick says "Now I can keep up with the Big Dogs" and I'm sure he can.

Secretary; Shirley Hastings

GEORGIA STATE MEET

April 11th & 12th. '08

 :

Make the trip to Albany, Ga. for the 5th Georgia SDC State Meet. We're planning to cruise to the meet. Remember, there's safety in numbers so join your Chapter members in a caravan cruise to the meet. Send me an E-mail at E-MAIL

CRUISE and did we CRUISE !!!

(Cruise of March 15, '08)

7:30 am we arrived for waffles, bacon and eggs at the Waffle House to find Tom Johnson already eating. It wasn't long before Ken and Carol Lawson, Nollie Hinton and Larry Bryanton showed up. Naturally, we didn't get away at O800 but pretty close, maybe 0825 but who's keeping score. Nollie in his 2004 Avanti, cell phone in hand lead the cruise followed by Larry in his '87 Avanti, Bob and Trish in their '56 G.Hawk, Tom Johnson in his 62 Lark and Ken and Carol brought up the rear guard, cell phone in hand in their 62 Green Champ pick up. Off we went to "OLD TOWN" so many miles and hours, yes, hours away.

Traffic was heavy in some areas but we moved along. Lots of "THUMBS UP" and stares but no eggs thrown. A few drops of rain fell and made little mud balls and streaks with the road dust--something to do when we arrive. We found "OLD TOWN" immediately off the highway, like turning into a driveway. Hugh sign that was visable a full block away which really helped as we haven't visited before. Ken and Carol took the front spot, at an intersection in the horseshoe display drive which allowed 4 of us to leave for home around 5 pm. Once in line, your there for the duration as discovered. "Thanks Ken and Carol" The Parade was at 8pm. sorry we missed it, but we had doggie park commitments Sunday.

On arrival out came the cameras, sun glasses and off to the shops went the girls. After making the cars presentable the guys joined them. The single guys stayed with the cars and educated the public about Studebaker's. Gift shops galore, if you can't find it, it simply doesn't exist. I didn't see even 1 sign, old advertisement or picture of a STUDEBAKER ! Maybe they never heard of one before or maybe we're simply--Lost-{Back to the future}?. Both the North Florida Chapter of Studebaker and Avanti Club of Florida were present with their beautiful cars and helped our chapter fill in the front parking area for the evening parade. Too many outstanding cars to list but my favorite was a Tan, '50 Bullet nose, Starlight coupe. I'd almost trade my '56 G.H. for that one--Trish said "NO" but I'd consider. Great interior, perfect matching paint to upholstery and great chrome.

Well, off to the Ice Cream shop. Double scoop of Blackcherry on a waffle cone for me and double scoop of Pistachio on a waffle cone for Trish. Walked and walked and walked in and out of shop after shop looking for that perfect item to bring home to the mother-in-law who was watching our pugs Lily and Ross. We finally found it, a pillow with print which says; "No outfit is complete without DOG HAIR" and with Pugs, thats the truth.

The weather was perfect at least till 5pm when we had to leave. Some sun, partly cloudy and just enough breeze to keep you comfortable. We all met back at the cars at 4:30 intending to eat together but no one had found a restaurant so we skipped the meal. We need more experience in the area. Hopefully they will feature "Studebaker's" again soon.

At 5:15pm Nollie, Larry, Tom and Trish and I decided to leave for Jacksonville. We returned via Routes I-192 to I- 4, & I-95. The trip back was only 3 Hrs, a whole hour shorter than the sightseeing trip taken going down. The mileage for the entire trip was 363 miles and I averaged 21.7 mpg--real happy with that. Nollie averaged 24.2 mpg in his 2004 Avanti. Larry and Tom haven't reported in as yet.
All-in-all a fun time. Enjoyed "OLD TOWN" even though I was sick with a bad cold. We look forward to another trip in the mid to late summer and plan on staying overnight. Sorry we missed the parade at 8 pm and only got to see about 75 other cars that gathered behind the shops. I'm sure there were a couple hundred by parade time. Great place, lots to see and do. Fun for a weekend for sure.

Additionally, although we didn't have a formal meeting we did have a membership renewal and we also spotted members Ben Rew and Debbie. They arrived in their sharp, Lark "SkyTop"---I guess we drive too slow for them to cruise. Hey! The more the merrier.

Our "Events" planner Bernie and her husband Nick also were on the grounds. Nick and his inlaws rode their "Goldwings" down with Bernie following in her Lark 8. We had a chance to talk for a few minutes then off they went. Don't they look like a fun couple ? We did get a picture or two.

PHENOMENAL

In the past, we have gone to Green Cove Springs Park and Anastasia Island Park for most of our cookouts and picnics.

A suggestion was made by Ken Lawson that we "cruise" to "Old Town" for the car show and parade (near Kississimee). There was a raffle for a set of 4 Studebaker logo glasses. Tickets were $5.00 each and Nick Kelpac won. (Quite a coincidence since his wife, Bernie, drew the winning ticket. !!!)
